Today is Ash Wednesday, the first
day of Lent. It’s common among Christians to practice some act of self-denial
during Lent, forgoing some favorite treat or habit for the duration of the season.
Early this week, I was wondering if I should give something up for Lent. (It
strikes me that there are a lot of things I should give up for better health,
but that’s a different motivation.) After pondering a while, I decided that
this year, I would do something I have done several times in the past: I would
add a practice for the season. So, this year, I’m not so much practicing
self-denial as I am practicing better devotion.
And here’s what I intend to do:
simply read the book of Psalms meditatively. Now, in my daily Bible, Psalms is
85 pages long, so that means I need to read a little over 2 pages a day. Below
is my schedule. If you’re looking for some devotional practice this holy
season, I’d invite you to join me in this little journey.
