Friday: “Love never fails… And
now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love”
(1 Corinthians 13:8, 13).
Why is love
the enduring virtue? Why is the greatest virtue? I think the answer lays in the
writings of John the apostle, not Paul. 1 John 4:8 declares simply, “God is
love.” The very character and nature of God is love. God is defined by
selflessness, generosity, and grace—you know, love.
Now, here’s
the thing: we were created in the image of God, and though that image was lost
in Adam’s fall, now in Christ that image is being restored to us. The day will
come when Christ returns and makes all things new and we will be fully in God’s
image again. Our character will fully reflect His. We will also be love. We
will truly be like God—in the way He intended, not the way Adam tried to usurp.
So, love is
the enduring virtue. Love is our ultimate destiny.
