“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:11; NIV).

Yesterday I noted that approaching the manger with a smug attitude about yourself means that you won’t fully appreciate the gift given there. However, approaching in repentant humility, fully aware of your sinfulness and failures? Well, that a whole different story.
The angel made his announcement to shepherds, considered low-class folks by just about all their contemporaries. They had no pretensions about their own worth. Yet, listen to what the angel told them they would find in the manger: a Savior, a Messiah, the Lord. What gifts they who had nothing to bring discovered awaiting them in a manger! Small wonder, then, that they “returned glorifying and praising God.” When you are at your lowest and discover the grace of God incarnate—you will glorify and praise God for His generous mercy, too!
